Rutgers women’s head coach Coquese Washington received more good news on the recruiting trail on Saturday. 4-star forward Zachara Perkins from Humble, Texas committed to the program.

Perkins is a 6’3″ multi-positional player who completed her first two scholastic seasons at prep powerhouse St. Pius X in Atlanta, Georgia. Per MaxPreps, she averaged 19.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.o steal in 21 games as a freshman. In 32 games as a sophomore. she averaged 23.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, 4.2 blocks, 3.o assists, and 1.3 steals.

This past year, Perkins moved home and played for Summer Creek in Houston. She earned All-State honors in the 6A Region, which is where the largest schools in Texas play. Her team went 35-5 and were district champs. She also plays for the CyFair Elite 17 on the EYBL circuit.

Even though she is a Texas native, Perkins has ties to New Jersey. Her mother is DeMya Walker-Wheatfall, a former high school All-American at Rancocas Valley high school in Mount Holly, New Jersey. She became Virginia’s all-time leader in field goal percentage and blocked shots before playing 12 seasons in the WNBA. Walker won a WNBA title in 2005 with the Connecticut Sun and averaged 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 335 career games. Walker-Wheatfall coached her daughter at St. Pius X.

Perkins plays with a high motor, can score in multiple ways and is an elite defender. She has great anticipation skills and rebounds at a high level. Perkins is a great addition for Rutgers and looks to be an impact player from day one. She is the first commit in the 2024 recruiting class for the Scarlet Knights. Washington and her staff have also added former McDonald’s All-American Destiny Adams and former 4-star Mya Petticord as transfers to next season’s roster.
