ParticipantI have not been shy about my frustration with Schiano 2.0 – particularly now that Rutgers is on the B1G gravy train, spending like drunken sailors on football staff and recruiting, with nothing to show for it. While Greg has a great defensive mind, learned how to recruit at a high level while at OSU, his inconsistency as a game day coach (going back to Schiano 1.0) and inability to pull together a complementary offense (his word), develop QBs – or hire an OC who can – are fatal flaws at this level.
It is no secret that Schiano 2.0 was a shotgun wedding, forced on Hobbs by boosters. Now armed with a competitive war chest, Hobbs has done an excellent job hiring the right kind of head coaches, reasonable to expect he would do the same for football.
Assuming another 4 (or even 5) win season, without meaningful progress developing a QB, when do boosters get tired of losing, listening to coach speak, break out the pitchforks, “encourage” Greg in to retirement? If he truly loves Rutgers as much as he professes, I would like to believe that a deal can be made, releasing Rutgers from most of the rest of the contract, allow for an orderly transition, where everyone gets to save face; perhaps name SHI stadium field after him? -

KeymasterTo answer your subject line question, I think it’s a long rope. I understand your frustrations for sure. It’s hard to have confidence year four this fall will be significantly better. That being said, I don’t see Rutgers or Schiano making a move to part ways any time soon. The $4 million annual salary is not something I can think Schiano would just walk away from without serious deal being made that favors himself. I also think Rutgers isn’t in a great spot to get rid of him and pay multiple years of his salary. I don’t think the “war chest” is going to change much anytime soon. The Big Ten is owed loans given to Rutgers and the optics with the athletic department running so much in the red year after year. I don’t have confidence that Rutgers would pay Schiano millions of dollars to no longer coach and also properly pay a new coach.
Thank you for using the forum and great topic. Look forward to your response as to others.

ParticipantSo you believe GS gets a pass for the next 4 years, regardless of performance?
If I understand correctly, GS’s comp plan includes a bonus structure based on season ticket sales, which kicks in at 20k tickets per year, paid out in 2022 (~21k tickets?). During the Ash era, season ticket sales hit a low of about 16k, I have to believe Hobbs would have no choice but to act if they fall back to that level – or worse. Rutgers, NJ fans are a fickle bunch, will eventually run out of patience.
Hobbs could create the position of special assistant to the AD, offer retirement honors if GS was to step down before the end of his contract.-

KeymasterSorry I didn’t reply sooner. I’m skeptical without a major issue that Rutgers would fire Schiano before year six. At some point, he’s going to push for an extension. It’s an odd dynamic to begin with when the AD didn’t even want to hire him. The politics are thick. We’ll see but financially Rutgers is not in a great position to fire him anytime soon.
