Rutgers field hockey opens the 2023 season with a three game road trip to California beginning on August 25 against UC-Davis. The Scarlet Knights will also face Stanford and Cal before heading back to the East Coast.
After winning the Big Ten Tournament Championship and advancing to the Elite Eight in 2021, Rutgers finished with an 8-10 record last season. They had wins over five ranked foes and finished the season No. 18 in the coaches poll.
The program was able to grow this off-season with an overseas trip to the Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, several additions to the program were made to solidify an already strong returning core.
There is plenty of returning talent for the Scarlet Knights. Team captains include Marique Dieudonne, a native of the Netherlands, as well as returning captains Guillermina Causarano and Sophia Howard. Last season, Dieudonne was second in goals and third in points for RU. Causarano was a Second Team All-Region selection last season while Howard had a .705 save percentage in her first season as the starting goalkeeper.
In addition, leading scorer and the player who makes the engine go for RU, Iris Langejans returns. As does several other key contributors including Lucy Bannatyne, , Bridy Molyneaux, Carly Snarski, Indy van Ik, and Puck Winter. Several newcomers could play big roles including Wake Forest transfer Ava Cickavage.
Head coach Meredith Civico joined The Scarlet Faithful podcast on Thursday. She has elevated the program to new heights in recent seasons. Topics discussed include lessons learned from last season, the development this off-season, the overseas trip, the new roster, non-conference schedule, expectations and more.
