You may have heard by now that Rutgers football opened preseason training camp on Thursday. Head coach Greg Schiano spoke to the media after the first practice of the season. You can find analysis in article form on why the defensive scheme will remain the same here as well as Schiano speaking on “huge improvements” needing to be made this season.

You can watch Schiano’s full press conference below

On Thursday’s podcast episode, I went through most of his comments made and discussed how to interpret them in regard to the outlook for this team.

Of course, Schiano was positive on the first day of training camp. But I also think he gave some indication on what he is confident in and what he is not.

Players leading the culture and the coaching staff were obvious positives, but also feel like legitimate factors for optimism. Secondary is another area that Schiano feels can be a strength.

Finding a true starting five on the offensive line and establishing a reliable core at wide receiver were certainly areas that can be considered a concern. Schiano was optimistic on both, but also to his credit he was not overreacting either.

It’s exactly one month until Rutgers opens the 2023 season at home against Northwestern. Schiano knows how much work that needs to be done. At the same time, he presented some legitimate reasons to be hopeful that this fall will be his most successful in his second tenure.
