Rutgers football is just five days away from opening the 2023 season against Northwestern at home. It’s a crucial game for the season, the program and the tenure of head coach Greg Schiano.
On Tuesday, Schiano expressed his excitement for opening the season at home. Rutgers is currently favored by almost a touchdown.
“I love playing at home obviously. Love playing at SHI Stadium. Love our fans,” boasted Schiano. “I’m sure they will bring a huge home-field advantage this week. Can’t wait. Can’t wait to get back there with them.”
Last week, Schiano made comments to Steve Politi of NJ Advance Media that rubbed some the wrong way. He spoke about having patience with the rebuild as being a choice, the poor state of the program when he took over and that it would be he who would decide if things weren’t working out, not the other way around.
On Tuesday, Schiano discussed the rebuild in a more unifying way.
“I’ve been here a long time, a lot of years. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly,” Schiano explained. “But we have some very loyal fans. And we’re going to provide what they are looking for. I believe that over time, it’s a steady growth and we are going to continue to grow, and like I’ve said before, we are going to get it back to where it needs to be and beyond but it’s a journey, and we’re all on that journey together, our fans, our team, the university, the state.”
With the 2023 season days away and it being so important to the long term outlook of the program, I discussed at length my interpretation of Schiano’s tone this preseason leading up the Sunday. I discuss the pressure and expectations for this season, the importance of this season in context to the overall rebuild and much more.

I wonder if this is classic “under promise over deliver.” I don’t see a reason why this defense won’t be really good. Either GS is very nervous about the offense or he’s setting us up to be excited about 5 to 6 wins, which honestly I think that a lot of us fans would be satisfied with. Especially if the younger guys develop.
