Welcome to episode No. 55 of The Scarlet Faithful Podcast. This episode focuses on day after thoughts following Rutgers’ 19 point comeback victory at Penn State on Sunday night.
The Scarlet Knights looked dead in the water trailing 42-23 with just over 17 minutes left in the game. Derek Simpson and to a lesser degree, Oskar Palmquist, led Rutgers back with their play off the bench. Caleb McConnell was huge in the second half while Cam Spencer made some big shots along with Cliff Omoruyi dominating on the boards and in defending the rim.
The real question now is whether Rutgers can build off of this win and continue to evolve as a team. They’re now 2-4 following the season ending injury to Mawot Mag. After struggling offensively for several games, Simpson helped change the team’s mentality in the second half comeback. Can this team channel their approach and continue to learn how to incorporate different parts to be a more dynamic offense? Sunday night gave hope they can with Simpson’s emergence in leading the offense.
In this episode, topics covered include big picture takeaways from the epic comeback on Sunday night. They include RU’s ability to still play at a high defensive level, the changing dynamics of the offense and rotation with new pieces stepping up, the current outlook for the postseason, the schedule ahead and more.
