Rutgers men’s basketball played its second game overseas on Wednesday. In its first contest in Portugal, RU defeated the Hoopers Club in blowout fashion, 119-62. The game took place at the Pavilhão Desportivo dos Lombos in Cascais, Portugal.

The Hoopers Club put a live stream of the exhibition on their YouTube channel. The telecast began a few minutes into the exhibition. Note they used a 24 second shot clock under FIBA rules so there were more possessions than usual.

Here is the box score and here is a recap of the stats:

  • Rutgers shot 18-42 from three-point range (42.9%).
  • They recorded 30 assists as a team
  • Gavin Griffiths led RU with 20 points including 5 of 10 from behind the arc.
  • Aundre Hyatt had 18 points (6-15 FG) and 8 rebounds.
  • Noah Fernandes had 17 points on 5 of 8 shooting and led RU with 8 assists. He was 3 of 6 from deep.
  • Antonio Chol had 16 points on 4 of 9 from three.
  • Cliff Omoruyi had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 2 steals
  • Derek Simpson has 12 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. He was 6 of 11 from the floor.
  • Oskar Palmquist had 11 points and 9 rebounds while making both shots from deep.
  • Antwone Woolfolk had 9 points and 10 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass.
  • Jamichael Davis had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
  • Jeremiah Williams, Austin Williams, Mawot Mag and Emmanuel Ogbole did not play.

One major takeaway so far through two games overseas is that Rutgers is taking and making a lot more shots from three-point range. It’s too early to determine if that is a shift offensively that will be a priority and also an effective weapon next season. With Aundre Hyatt, Gavin Griffiths and Noah Fernandes on the roster, it does appear that both are possible. Antonio Chol could emerge as well.

Lastly, please remember to take these results in stride. The level of competition is hard to quantify and certainly not anywhere close to a Big Ten level. That being said, it’s great to see Rutgers share the basketball, play a free flowing style and knock down shots from the perimeter.

This is really great. Thanks for posting the video and for the stats. I wondered the same thing regarding the volume of 3 point attempts and makes and thought that perhaps the line was closer. Seeing the video, it’s clearly not the case. Chol is an intriguing player. I think I remember Jerry Carino saying he was impressed watching Chol last year in preseason practices. If he can emerge as a rotational player off of the bench, especially if Mag takes some time to get going, it would be an important addition. Go RU!

Even with a suspect opponent, it is good to hear that our three point shooting is looking so good.
