Rutgers men’s basketball won its third and final game overseas on Friday. In its second contest in Portugal, RU defeated the Hoopers Club 121-65 to finish 3-0. This came two days after beating the same team 119-62. Both games took place at the Pavilhão Desportivo dos Lombos in Cascais, Portugal. The Scarlet Knights won its lone game in Africa against Senegal Select in dramatic fashion by the final score of 85-83.
Note that for a second straight game in Portugal, a 24 second shot clock was utilized playing under FIBA rules. That leads to more possessions and more points.
In addition, the competition is hard to quantify but certainly well under a high major level. There are not many true takeaways you can take from results.
Winning is always positive.
One major takeaway so far through two games overseas is that Rutgers is taking and making a lot more shots from three-point range. They were 12 of 28 for 42.9% on Friday. They made 48 of 100 over the three games. More on this in my trip takeaways on Saturday.
It’s too early to determine if that is a shift offensively that will be a priority and also an effective weapon next season. With Aundre Hyatt, Gavin Griffiths and Noah Fernandes on the roster, it does appear that both are possible. Antonio Chol could emerge as well.
It’s great to see Rutgers share the basketball, play a free flowing style and knock down shots from the perimeter.
Here is the box score and here is a recap of the stats:
