While Rutgers men’s basketball is on the cusp of landing a historic 2024 recruiting class, the coaching staff continues to build momentum with the 2025 class as well.
5-star guard and the No. 10 overall prospect in 2025, Trey McKinney, confirmed that he is set to take an official visit to Rutgers in October. The playmaker excelled on the Nike EYBL circuit in recent months after being named the Michigan Associated Press as the Division 1 Player of the Year for Orchard Lake St. Mary’s high school. He averaged 25.4 points and 11.1 rebounds as a sophomore.
Rutgers is recruiting at a very high level in the 2025 recruiting cycle. McKenney is just the latest elite prospect that Steve Pikiell and staff are in the mix for. They are in pursuit of 5-star guard Darius Adams, who’s sister Destiny plays for Rutgers women’s basketball, as well as the top shooting guard in the class, Meleek Thomas. McKenney’s teammate, Darius Acuff, has exploded this summer and Rutgers has offered him as well. Other intriguing targets in the class that Rutgers is focusing on include 4-star wing Brandon Stores Jr.and 3-star guard Nigel James.
There is no denying that new assistant coach Marlon Williamson has made an impact for Rutgers on the recruiting trail so far. He is the lead recruiter for several of the 2025 targets. Whether RU can land any of his recruits remains to be seen and is obviously the true measure of his effectiveness. That being said, early signs are positive.
It’s also very important for Rutgers to make sure the potential top 5 recruiting class in 2024 is not an outlier. Building behind it with a strong 2025 class is key towards raising the ceiling for the program long term. Pikiell’s ability to add recruits who fit his style and culture but improve talent and depth is essential to that.
