Rutgers needs its cornerbacks to rise to the occasion this fall if the defense is to take a legitimate step forward this season. With improved depth and top end talent returning, this group could be as good as any within the program.

Max Melton is the top corner for Rutgers and seems poised to have his best season yet. He’s had flashes of greatness but hasn’t been able to sustain it over the course of a full season. If Melton can win most of his battles against the opposing No. 1 receiver, it will help the Rutgers defense take another step forward this fall. There is depth at corner for RU, but Melton is the most talented. His ability to impact special teams is key is well.

Robert Longerbeam has a nose for the ball and is a very good No. 2 cornerback for Rutgers. He isn’t particularly big but he a great feel in defending wide receivers. If Longerbeam can be consistent, he will form one of the top duos at cornerback in the Big Ten.

Kessawn Abraham has a lot of experience and has been very good at times for Rutgers in his career. He dealt with injuries last season but has a chance to play a key role this fall.

Trasnfer Eric Rogers could be among several others that could play a major role for the cornerbacks this season.

Thanks so much Aaron and David. This position group makes me much more hopeful for an improved Rutgers defense and team. Longerbeam seems to have great instincts as he always kept making impressive plays in key moments.
