Both Rutgers football and basketball have had opportunities to make impressions this past week. There have been some quick takes that might have some validity to them. However, a measured outlook in August is also important to have.
Preseason training camp is over a week in now. The Big Ten Network made its annual visit to Rutgers camp on Wednesday. It’s likely the most intel that will be revealed publicly about the football team before they take the field against Northwestern on Sunday, September 3. With that being said, we didn’t learn too much new.
The BTN crew was very high on the defense, as to be expected. Greg Schiano emphasized that the defense would be the strength of the team. Defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak was very enthusiastic about his unit as well.
The offense was another story. While Schiano and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca spoke positively in regard to the development of quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, the BTN crew wasn’t very optimistic about the passing game for Rutgers.
As for men’s basketball, they played its first exhibition of their overseas trip in Senegal on Thursday night. Rutgers won 85-83 after Antwone Woolfolk scored the game winning basket on a put back at the buzzer. Without a live stream and box score, it’s hard to truly assess how the teams looked in its first action together. That being said, there are reasons to be positive and also understand that only so much should be evaluated.

Sounds like Simon could be the key to the season, either due to injury or offensive
ineffectiveness.

I am just going to assume the passing game and offense suck once again and hope for the best. This way I have zero expectations and can hope that the defense and special teams can lead us to some wins.

I am actually hoping that the O-line makes some strides forward and that they can generate a running with our RBs, which are still one of the strongest rooms on the team. Run the ball effectively and pass the ball to keep the defense honest.

I also think that the defense is much deeper and will be better this season.

Good podcast Aaron. Since all true Rutgers fans suffer from a form of PTSD this behavior was to be expected. 😉
