After breaking the Rutgers gymnastics record for highest all-around score of 39.525 last weekend, Hannah Joyner made more history on Tuesday. She became the first Scarlet Knight ever to be named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week.
Joyner’s record breaking performance led Rutgers in producing a new program record for a home meet team score with a 196.375 on Saturday. RU also delivered a program record score on the beam as a team in part due to Joyner.
Against No. 23 Illinois, Joyner won two events in the meet, the bars and the beam. Her 9.900 on bars tied a career-high, while her 9.925 on beam tied for the fifth-best score in program history on her way to the best all-around score for a Rutgers gymnast.
Saturday’s record breaking performance by Joyner topped Luisa Leal’s score of 39.500. Leal held the program record for ten years. In addition, Joyner extended her program record with the 28th and 29th scores of 9.9 or better in her career. She is the only Rutgers gymnast ever to earn a score of 9.9 or higher in all four events in her career.
In her senior season, Joyner continues to add to her tremendous legacy at Rutgers. The three-time All-Big Ten First Team selection and two Academic All-Big Ten honoree is on a quest for the second Nationals appearance of her collegiate career. She has been a force for head coach Umme Salim-Beasley. Rutgers continues to deliver program record breaking performances and Joyner is a major reason why.
Rutgers and Joyner will next compete at Oregon State on Friday, January 27.
