Following the news that Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano named Gavin Wimsatt the starting quarterback on Wednesday, I recorded my rapid reaction on the move for the latest episode of The Scarlet Faithful podcast. It was first reportedby Brian Fonseca of NJ Advance Media.
Wimsatt struggled with accuracy last season, completing just 44.8% of his 145 pass attempts. That was the second lowest completion percentage in FBS last fall. However, Wimsatt was dealing with significant adversity. He missed three games with an ankle injury and wasn’t 100% the rest of the season once he did return. And all five starts came after offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson was fired. With Kirk Ciarrocca hired to replace him this offseason, he wasn’t shy about the importance of developing Wimsatt.
During spring camp Ciarrocca said of Wimsatt, “I think Gavin’s working really hard at it, I can see that. He’s obviously a very talented young man,” stated Ciarrocca. “He’s got really good physical skills. But I just love his work ethic, his energy. I don’t have any basis to compare it to. It’s just where he’s at is where he’s started and he’s been doing a great job working really hard and getting better every day.”
Naming Wimsatt the starter now gives him and the offense the best chance to succeed this season. The more development time they have during training camp the better. The offensive line needs to improve, the wide receivers are mostly unproven, tight end will be featured more prominently and Samuel Brown works his way back after a season ending injury. In the lead role above all else is Wimsatt at quarterback. Ciarrocca has brought stability to the offense and now all the pieces can work together in training camp to make the most progress possible before the season opener on September 3 against Northwestern.

Agree about going all in on Wimsatt. The quicker the coaching staff can find out where this athlete is in terms of development the better the program will be for it. I’m probably more confident in this caching staff from top to bottom than most. I think they have the experience and know how to bring this program to the next level sooner rather than later.

The coaching staff apparently have a lot of confidence in Wimsatt. Who am I to disagree.
