No. 7/8 Rutgers men’s lacrosse lost to Army for the fourth time in the last five meetings with a 14-13 defeat on Saturday. It was the program’s third straight loss against the Cadets in West Point.
The Scarlet Knights started slow and fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter. They responded with four straight goals to take a 6-5 lead midway through the second quarter. However, the RU defense allowed four unanswered goals to end the first half trailing Army 9-6.
Rutgers went 23 minutes without scoring before two goals late in the third quarter cut the lead to 10-8 entering the final frame. Trailing 12-9 with 10:43 to play, RU scored three straight goals to make it a tie game with 8:55 remaining. After falling behind again, Ross Scott scored his fifth goal of the game tie it at 13-13 with just over five minutes left to play. However, Army won the game on a goal from Paul Johnson with 3:54 left in the game. The Scarlet Knights were unable to find the equalizer and fall to 2-1 on the season. They beat Stony Brook 11-7 just last weekend.
Scott finished with six points as he also had an assist. Brian Cameron registered his third straight hat trick to start the season. Jack Aimone had two goals and two assists. Additional goals were scored by David Sprock, Dante Kulas and Noah Daniels.
Goalkeeper Kyle Mullin finished with 11 saves and the defense forced 15 turnovers while going 13 of 18 with clearances.
Rutgers returns home for a showdown with No. 11/12 Loyola on Saturday, February 25. The Greyhounds have beaten two top ten Big Ten teams already after knocking off then No. 1 Maryland last weekend and No. 9 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. They won both contests by five goal and have been an impressive team to start the season. It will be a huge test for the Scarlet Knights.
