Rutgers baseball announced the addition of a pitcher through the transfer market on Wednesday as Jack Eshleman joins the program. He pitched the last two years at Division III Hamilton College and has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6’2″, 185 pound right hander is coming off of a dominant sophomore campaign. Eshleman made seven starts for Hamilton finishing with a 3-0 record, an 1.14 ERA, 0.51 WHIP, 51 strikeouts and just three walks in 31.2 innings pitched. He allowed just 13 hits and opponents batted just .123 against him.

The transfer hurler from Collegeville, Pennsylvania is the first of what is expected to be several pitchers added through the portal this offseason. Seven pitchers from last season’s roster are currently in the transfer portal. They include senior relievers Sam Bello and Garrett French, as well as senior John Modungo and freshman Grant Besser, who split time as starters and in the bullpen. In addition, senior Jayson Hoopes, sophomore Matt Rowe and freshman JT Kroner are also leaving.

Last season, Rutgers was led by freshman starter Christian Coppola that resulted in earning First Team All-Big Ten honors. He led the conference with a 3.68 ERA and recently earned an invitation to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp this summer. He’ll anchor a starting rotation next season that Eshleman now has the opportunity to make a positive impact on for 2024.

The pitching staff struggled at times with control at times last season. Eshleman produced a lot of swing and misses as well as limiting free passes to the bases at Hamilton. There should be hope that his power and control will translate well for Rutgers next spring.

More to come as the roster continues to be built for the 2024 season.

Wow, nice first step in the pitching rebuild for 2024! Need a starting left-handed pitcher and a closer as a priority to complement Coppola as the Friday night starter.
