Down to the last out in the top of the ninth inning and trailing St. John’s 1-0, Rutgers freshman Trevor Cohen came through with a game winning three run double on Tuesday. It was a 3-1 comeback win fueled by patience at the plate as Hugh Pickney, Danny Melnick and Josh Kuroda-Grauer all drew walks to load the bases. Cohen’s hit propelled the Scarlet Knights to its sixth straight victory and ten in the last eleven games. Rutgers is now 25-16 overall while St. John’s dropped to 19-19 this season.
The Rutgers pitching staff continued to put the team in a position to win as they allowed just six hits total and one earned run in the win. Jake Marshall tossed three scoreless innings to start the game and allowed just one hit. Joe Mazza followed with two scoreless innings of relief. After Wyatt Parliament allowed two hits a run, Sam Portnoy and Garrett French combined for two scoreless innings. Ethan Bowen threw a scoreless eighth inning and earned his first career win after RU broke through in the top of the ninth. Ben Gorski shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.
In the midst of a 5-0 start on the current road trip, Rutgers now heads to Purdue for a three-game series this weekend. It’s a critical Big Ten matchup as RU is 7-5 in league play. The Boilermakers are 8-7 in Big Ten action and 19-20 overall. The Scarlet Knights will look to keep their hot streak alive with strong pitching performances and timely hitting. Friday’s game will be streamed on B1G+ at 6 p.m. ET. Saturday’s game will air live on the Big Ten Network at 5 p.m. ET. Sunday’s finale will stream on B1G+ at 12 p.m. ET.
