Sad news broke on Wednesday as it was reported that Rutgers basketball legend Phil Sellers is in poor health condition. Steve Politi of NJ Advance Media wrote a great profile on Sellers here.

Sellers recently had two surgeries involving his intestines and lungs. He is “currently bedridden, being fed intravenously and has a tracheotomy to help his breathing.”

His daughter, Kendra Palmer, has set up a Go Fund Me Page in hopes of raising $150,000 to help pay for all of her father’s medical bills. She gives great detail on his current situation, prognosis and a clear plan of how the funds raised will be used to help Sellers.

Palmer writes, “Since his playing days, Phil has lived a modest life, living and working in New Jersey, raising a family and becoming a doting grandfather. He has persevered after having lost his dear wife Pat to cancer four years ago and more recently having a hip replaced. Phil has always been a proud man, a self sufficient individual who never looked for help. But his life took an unexpected turn for the worse recently and we are hoping the community that remembers all that Phil did to put RU on the map years ago can contribute in some way now.”

Sellers has meant so much to Rutgers men’s basketball. He was the best player on the 1975-1976 Final Four team that won 31 games. He remains the program’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. As a consensus All-American, his No. 12 is retired and hangs from the rafters of Jersey Mike’s Arena. A man greatly responsible for helping to put Rutgers basketball on the map now needs the help of the fan base and community.

If you are able to donate any money at all to help Sellers, click here to do so.

Wishing Sellers a full and complete recovery.
