The first ever Scarlet Open is just days away and a great opportunity to support the Rutgers men’s basketball program. The event takes place on Sunday, July 23 at Top Golf in Edison, New Jersey. It is being run by Geo Baker and his organization Knight Society. All of the players and coaches are participating. It’s a chance for fans and donors to meet the team and support them with NIL.
The event begins with brunch and an auction of items at 11:30 a.m. The golf competition then takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cocktails, dinner and an award ceremony concludes the event scheduled to finish at 4:30 p.m. The Front Office is producing the event for the Knight Society.
With NIL and the transfer portal reshaping the college basketball landscape, the more the fan base can do to support Rutgers men’s basketball off the court, the better. The program has seen firsthand the challenges with keeping grad transfers this offseason in the NIL era. Being able to provide as many NIL opportunities for ever player on the roster will help lead to a more competitive program long term.
It makes sense that this event was created by Baker, a key figure and pioneer in NIL becoming a reality for student-athletes. With Knight Society, Baker has combined the mission of NIL for student-athletes with offering unique experiences for fans to connect with them. The Scarlet Open checks both boxes. It also is an example of NIL being utilized in the way in which it was intended to be.
