Rutgers defensive lineman Mayan Ahanotu has played in all 34 games that he’s been in the program for over the previous three seasons. With his final year of eligibility upon him, Ahanotu reflected on his career in an exclusive interview with the The Scarlet Faithful on Monday.

Ahanatou won the Douglas A. Smith Second Effort Award for most improved defensive player during spring practice this year. A team captain last season, Ahanotu started three games and played in all 12 contests along the defensive line. He had nine tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a pass breakup last season. He’s also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The annual award celebrates “college football student-athletes who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.”

After beginning his college career at Minnesota, Ahanotu transferred to Rutgers soon after Greg Schiano returned as head coach. It’s been a positive move as the defensive lineman has been a solid contributor all three seasons he’s been with the program. Now with his final training camp approaching, he hopes to help the Scarlet Knights get to the next level this season.

In this podcast interview, we covered a variety of topics. They include discussing his journey as a player, his experience helping to turn the program around, playing for Greg Schiano in high school before coming to Piscataway, what Marquise Watson is like as a coach, the offensive line outlook, what the Darkside means for the defense and much more.
