Episode No. 98 of The Scarlet Faithful podcast welcomes Rutgers guard Derek Simpson for an exclusive interview. After having some big moments as a freshman, Simpson is now poised to play a larger role as a lead guard in the 2023-2024 season.
In 34 games as a freshman, Simpson averaged 7.1 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 20.1 minutes per contest. As the season progressed, Simpson played more and more minutes down the stretch. He had the ball in his hands in key moments and came through in big wins. His performances against Indiana, Penn State and Michigan to name a few were clear signs that Simpson’s future was very bright.
With the departures of starting guards Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy, the stage is set for Simpson to lead the offense next season along with UMass transfer Noah Fernandes. He should also play a key role in helping true freshmen Gavin Griffiths and Jamichael Davis adjust to college basketball.
Topics discussed in this episode include Simpson’s freshman season, the roster changes this offseason, the newcomers added, the development of the team and growth with his own game, expectations, the upcoming overseas trip, coach Pikiell’s message to the team and much more.

Scary how much Derek reminds me of Geo. Would like to believe Derek has a higher ceiling, growth of the program will help get him there.
