Welcome to episode No. 48 of The Scarlet Faithful podcast. On Monday, Rutgers football introduced Kirk Ciarrocca as its new offensive coordinator. Head coach Greg Schiano and Ciarrocca answered questions from the media for approximately 30 minutes.
There was a lot of information and insight given. Hearing the two coaches speak about their reunion and what the offense will look like moving forward was insightful. Ciarrocca brings plenty of experience in developing quarterbacks, calling plays and doing it all within the Big Ten. To learn more on Ciarrocca’s tenures and impact at Minnesota, you can listen to episode No. 47 with Dan Dietzel of Gopher Insight.
In this episode, I focus on key points while incorporating audio of Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano and new offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca discussing his return to the program from Monday’s introductory press conference. Schiano and Ciarrocca discuss their shared approach to the offense, the need to fit the system to the personnel, the hiring process, NIL, on what being balanced means, hiring new assistant coaches, quarterback development and much more.
There is a lot to discuss and consider around Ciarrocca returning to Rutgers. Despite after it not working out well under Schiano over a decade to go, he returns a more proven and experienced coordinator. The encouraging part of what Ciarrocca said on Monday was the belief he has in himself to run the offense the way he knows it needs to be done in order to be successful.

The press conference (as well as your recap) was encouraging. I went from being very neutral on the hire to somewhat optimistic.
Seems like they stressed Kirk’s ability to develop both coaches and players.
However, not much was said about Kirk’s ability as a recruiter. Where does he fall in the ranking of CFB / B1G recruiters? Which states has he had success?

Thank you! I should have touched on that more but he is not highly ranked. He is known for having an eye for QB talent. It’s going to make the two offensive assistant hires crucial for sure. That’s my big concern will Kirk have enough talent to mold the offense into his vision?
