Welcome to episode No. 44 of The Scarlet Faithful podcast. The Rutgers gymnastics program begins the 2023 season on Friday, January 6 in Las Vegas at the Super 16 Collegiate Gymnastics Challenge. The Scarlet Knights will be competing at 11:00 p.m. ET airing live on the Big Ten Network. RU is in a pod against No. 14 Oregon State, No. 17 Stanford and No. 20 Georgia.
To preview the season ahead, head coach Umme Salim-Beasley is our guest for this episode. Entering her fifth season at the helm, Salim-Beasley has elevated the program in a major way. Last season, Rutgers produced the highest score in team history as well as the highest score for the program ever at the Big Ten Championships. Three gymnasts also advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
In addition, Salim-Beasley brought in a top 15 recruiting class for this year’s team. Expectations continue to rise for this program under her direction. Rutgers received 50 points for 44th place in the WCGA Preseason Top 36 Poll.
Topics discussed in this interview include recruiting, replacing several injured contributors, the return of star Hannah Joyner, the progress that Rutgers has made over the past two seasons, the Big Ten, expectations for this season and much more.
Thanks to coach Salim-Beasley for taking time to discuss her program ahead of Friday’s season opening meet. And thank you for listening and watching The Scarlet Faithful Podcast.
