Jon Rothstein of CBSSports reported the upcoming matchups of the 2023 Gavitt Games for next season. The series matches Big East teams against Big Ten teams in honor of former Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt.

Neither league has formally announced these matchups with date and time still to be determined.

Rutgers is 1-3 in its four previous games in the series. They have lost twice against St. John’s and split two meetings with DePaul. The Scarlet Knights did not play in the event last season.

Steve Pikiell has already scheduled away games at Wake Forest following their visit to Piscataway last season as well as at Seton Hall as part of the Garden State Hardwood Classic. Playing Georgetown is the third high major now known as part of the non-conference schedule for Rutgers. Playing the Hoyas could potentially not help much from a NET perspective. Despite hiring Ed Cooley as head coach, Georgetown is expected to be one of the worst teams in the Big East next season.

The two schools have met 43 times including as former Big East foes with Georgetown holding a 28-15 series lead. The most famous in the matchup from a Rutgers perspective was the win over the Hoyas at the Big East East Tournament. Geoff Billet’s game winning shot at the buzzer sent the Scarlet Knights to the semifinals for the first and only time the program was in the conference.

There have been reports of RU working to schedule a neutral court game locally with another high major. Adding that type of matchup is really needed to improve non-conference strength of schedule. Here are 20 Big Ten matchups confirmed by the league earlier this offseason. More to come as the schedule develops.

Will be particularly interesting if Spencer ends up with the Hoyas: ‘revenge is a dish best served cold’.

From what I understand, part of Cooley’s demands from G’tn was a promise of $3 million in NIL $$. G’tn, like RU, is behind in the NIL game & Cooley knows he has to work the portal (which he did successfully at Providence). G’tn has good alumni base and I know an alum who says G’tn desperately wants to be relevant again – hence Cooley & the beginning of ramping up their NIL $$ focused on their only major sport. I wouldn’t underestimate the team Cooley puts on the court against RU. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Spencer ends up there.

This is almost certainly nothing outside of a must win game against a program in major rebuilding mode. Any other matchup would’ve been preferable. Oh well.
